Promise Me. Chapter 8 - You Broke Me.

Jacob’s POV.

I walked into the place, solemn and quiet. After the call I had from Mike about Courtney, I rushed to the hospital, leaving Andy at the apartment. What am I going to do with him? He’s a complete wreck. Ashleey just died a few weeks ago, and now Courtney is taking her own life. Oh god, I hate the smell of hospitals. I saw Mike waiting outside, biting his nails. I ran towards him.
“Tell me she’s okay!” I went hysterical, people began to stare. Mike grabbed me and pulled me into a room.
“Man, if you’re gonna ask me about Court then don’t make a scene,” he said.
“I’m sorry, I just, I can’t lose her,” I said softly.
“She’s stable, no thanks to you,” he spat.
“what the hell is that supposed to mean?” I replied.
“you did this! You left her!”
“What?!”
“why else would she do this?! She feels alone!” he said through gritted teeth.
“and that’s my fault?! You’re her boyfriend; you’re supposed to be there for her! That’s what boyfriends do.” I pointed.
“well sue me, ass hole,” he scoffed.
“I’m a ass hole? She probably cut herself because you’re always out with your buddies, having road trips to Connecticut without her, and not even calling,”
“how do you know that?” his voice breaking,
“I know Courtney, I know when something’s wrong, I call her, to ask if she’s okay, and I’m not even her boyfriend anymore,”
He turned away, I saw a tear roll down his cheek. He was lost for words; he didn’t realize Courtney tried to kill herself. Those last words are probably ringing in his ears. His knees buckled and he fell to the ground and broke down crying.
Mike Meesa doesn’t cry.
I stood there, watching the tears fall from his eyes unwillingly. I crouched down and looked at him. I felt like crying looking at Mike at this state. I put my hand on his back, and rubbed it.
“I know you love her Mike, It’s okay to cry,”
“I can’t believe this!” he wailed, “I didn’t mean to hurt her this bad! I broke her.. I broke her..” He repeated it as if he was a baby learning his first words. I held his shoulder and looked down.
“don’t worry buddy, she’s gonna be fine,”

We entered the hospital and saw Massie and Kim waiting outside her room.
“Courtney wants you guys,” Massie said, pushing a streak of her hair behind her ear.
“Courtney’s not looking so good,” Kim continued after Massie.
I placed one hand on Mike’s shoulder after I nodded at two of Courtney’s best friends.
“you ready?” I asked,
He just nodded as we both walked in, unprepared. Her hair was no longer in a neat ponytail, draped over her shoulder. It was loose and tangled, sticking to the sides of her face. She looked unhealthily pale. There were what seemed to be pounds of gauze covering the self-inflicted slash to her wrist.

Courtney’s POV.

I caught the eyes of Mike and Jacob, but I didn’t say anything. My mind was still a bit foggy, but I caught the smell of a hospital and groaned. Mike made his way over to me. His eyes were clouded, staring at me. Jacob stood at the doorway, not wanting to come closer, as if I’m that fragile. Mike motioned at him, but he just shook his head. He looked back at me and stroked my hair.
“Courtney, are you okay?” he asked warmly.
I shakily lifted my hand and pulled his away. I looked out the window; it hurt my eyes with a painful sensation. I rather have my eyes burnt than look back at those two people who’re acting like I’m a spectacle for everyone to see.
“Court, look at me,” he said, sounding more affirming.
I looked back at him. His eyes were now empty.
“you can talk to me,”
“I want to be alone, Mike,” I said, not actually realizing I was saying that.
“wha—okay, we’ll leave,” he voice raspy, like he had been screaming for hours, “just call me, us, when you need something,” He leaned forward and pecked my forehead and left.
He crashed onto the chair outside my room. Jacob was still standing at the door.
“you know all he’s trying to do is help, you better get that attitude in check,” he said, not even looking at me,
I looked away from him, feeling guilty for what I did, even though I really didn’t mean to.
“and how you could you be so stupid Courtney?! Cutting?! Since when?!”
I looked at him, with tears forming in my eyes.
“SINCE YOU LEFT ME!” I yelled.
His stern face fell. I hope those words haunt him for the rest of his life.
